The Eco Club of St. Charles College of Arts and Science, Eraiyur, organized a “Zero Waste” Awareness Seminar on 2 September 2026 at ABC Hall. The programme was graced by Rev. Fr. Vincent Thamburaj SDB as the Chief Guest.
The seminar focused on creating awareness about major environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, deforestation, plastic pollution, global warming, ozone layer depletion, forest fires, and glacier melting. Through an informative keynote presentation, the Chief Guest highlighted the importance of responsible environmental practices and encouraged students to adopt the 5R Principle – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot.
Year-wise awareness sessions were conducted for students, followed by an interactive discussion involving 60 Eco Club members divided into 12 groups. Students shared practical ideas for implementing the 5R principles at college and at home. “Plastics Free Campus” awareness cards were also distributed to promote a plastic-free and sustainable campus.
A special session for teaching and non-teaching staff focused on developing a Zero Waste Campus through initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy, tree plantation, waste segregation using a four-bin system, composting, and establishing a herbal garden. The management and staff actively participated in discussions on implementing these eco-friendly initiatives in a phased manner.
The seminar successfully created environmental awareness among students and staff and inspired the college community to adopt sustainable practices for a cleaner, greener and healthier future.
