Department Profile

Overview

The Department of Mathematics at St. Charles College of Arts and Science, Eraiyur was established in the year 2019 with the aim of offering quality higher education in Mathematics. Initially, the college was affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University for the first two academic years and is presently affiliated to Annamalai University. Since its inception, the department has been committed to academic excellence, skill development and holistic growth of students. At present, the department has a total student strength of 23 at the undergraduate level. The department plays a vital role in equipping students with strong mathematical foundations, analytical skills and logical thinking essential for both academic and professional success.

Faculty Strength and Expertise

The Department of Mathematics is headed by Mr. S. Arun Benson, M.Sc., M.Ed., M.Phil., who has over 8 years of teaching experience and provides effective academic leadership and guidance. The department is supported by a team of dedicated and qualified faculty members:Mr. S Velusamy, M.Sc.,M.Ed. M.Phil.,Mrs. G. Sindhumathi, B.E.,B.Ed. Mrs.T Keerthika, M.Sc., B.Ed.The faculty members adopt student-centric teaching methodologies, integrating classroom instruction with seminars, workshops, guest lectures and practical learning experiences to enhance employability and professional competence.

Teaching–Learning Practices

The department follows innovative and participatory teaching–learning methods such as interactive lectures, problem-solving sessions, peer learning, seminars and exhibitions. Continuous assessment, mentoring and academic support are provided to ensure effective learning outcomes. Special emphasis is given to preparing students for competitive examinations and government job opportunities.

Student Achievements

The department takes pride in the achievements of its students. Four students from the department have successfully secured employment in the Postal Department. Additionally, Ms. Arokia Jenifer cleared the Tamil Nadu Group II Examination and obtained a prestigious State Government job. These achievements reflect the academic rigor, guidance and motivational support provided by the department.

Extension and Outreach Activities

As part of its social responsibility, the Department of Mathematics has adopted the village Vadakurumbur for outreach programmes. Faculty and students actively participate in various community-oriented activities such as awareness rallies, Literacy Day celebrations, and the Stamp Pad to Signature Programme, aimed at promoting literacy and social awareness among the rural population. These initiatives help students develop leadership qualities, social sensitivity and civic responsibility.

Co-curricular and Extra-curricular Activities

The department regularly organizes and participates in exhibitions, seminars, interdepartmental competitions, and educational visits such as book fairs every semester. These activities enhance students’ communication skills, teamwork, creativity and exposure to contemporary developments in education and society.
